Os cerrados maranhenses estão localizados na Bacia Parnaibana principalmente ao leste e sul do estado. A área de estudo localiza-se na Mesorregião Oeste do Maranhão entre os municípios de Urbano Santos e Barreirinhas. As coletas foram realizadas mensalmente de setembro dc 1991 a agosto de 1992 com 12 horas de duração cada. Foram capturados 196 espécimens, 17 espécies e 6 gêneros de Anthophoridae. Centrisfoi o gênero com maior diversidade e abundância (7 espécies; 115 indivíduos), seguido de Xylocopa(4; 59) e Paratetrapedia(3; 17). Estiveram em atividade durante o ano todo, porém os maiores picos de abundância no número de indivíduos foram nos meses de outubro e novembro, que coincidiram com o período de maior floração do cerrado. A study of four tree-hole nesting bee species of Centris Fabricius, 1804 was conducted between July, 1988 and June, 1990 in isolated and continuous "terra firme" forests at Manaus region. Nests were obtained from wood trap-nests of different diameters and consisted of a linear series of brood cells. Centris dichrootricha (Moure, 1945) and C. terminata Smith, 1874 were the most abundant species. Centris terminata nested principally in gaps and continuous forest and C. dichrootricha in cleared areas and small fragments of forest. More nests were obtained in trap-nests placed at 8 and 15 m height above ground. Nesting activity was more pronounced in the wet season between August and January. A survey of the genus Xylocopa Latreille, 1802 is given for Rio Grande do Sul, the southernmost State of Brazil. Data are based on several studies on the bee fauna of southern Brazil and on unpublished observations. A key is provided to the species (males and females) and information on distribution, nesting habits and relation to flowers. Rio Grande do Sul is strikingly rich in species of Xylocopa because of the diversity of habitats and its geographic position in the transition of tropical/subtropical to temperate climate. The presence of glands in insect legs is largely difunded. In bees they are present in solitary and social species. In Centris and Epicharis three different types of glandular structures were found: bag-shaped structures in males femur and tibia, unicelular glandular cells in ali segments of all leg pairs in males and females, but more developed in females, and differentiated epidermis in the basitarsus of both sexes. The tarsal gland present in the distal tarsomere of all legs of males and females are a special type of the bag-shaped structure. The nature of secretion and it use is unknow, but some morphological and stainning properties indicate a lipidic nature. A polinização, o sistema reprodutivo e a fenologia de floração de Byrsonima sericea, foram estudados no período de outubro/1997 a fevereiro/1998 na Reserva Ecológica de Dois Irmãos, Recife (PE). Byrsonima sericea possui porte arbóreo (3 a 20m), com período de floração de outubro a fevereiro. As flores são hermafroditas, zigomorfas, agrupadas em inflorescências do tipo racemo terminal. A corola é amarela e possui cinco pétalas unguiculadas, sendo a superior modificada em forma de estandarte. O cálice é formado por cinco sépalas com dez glândulas epiteliais produtoras de óleo, os elaióforos. Em alguns indivíduos essas glândulas são ausentes.
